Dogfish Head Brews Up a Guided By Voices Beer Called 'Beer Thousand'

by The Drink Nation on Jun 23, 2014 in Beer

Dogfish Head Craft Brewery has yet another limited release cued up for its ongoing Music Series collection of beers. This one, perhaps the most deserving, celebrates always thirsty indie rock stalwarts Guided By Voices (GBV) and the 20th anniversary of its melodic, lo-fi magnum opus, Bee Thousand.

The brew, appropriately titled Beer Thousand, debuted last Friday at the band’s show at the Barrymore Theatre in Madison, WI. A small batch is also currently available on draft at Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats in Rehoboth Beach, DE. This fall will see a wider, bottled release.

Inspired by the thousands of cans of lager the band threw back while recording Bee Thousand in their homes, backyard sheds and garages in the early nineties, Dogfish Head brewed a hefty, 10 percent ABV Imperial Lager with 10 grains and 10 hop varieties. That’s 10x10x10, which equals 1,000. Clever, huh? When released later this year, Beer Thousand will be bundled with a 10-inch record with 10 songs recorded live June 25, 1994, during the "Insects of Rock" tour, the band's first tour.

On a number of different occasions, outgoing White House Press Secretary Jay Carney professed his love for the Dayton, Ohio ensemble, calling them “the greatest rock 'n' roll band of the modern era.” Though not as vocal in his praise, Calagione expressed his undying support for the band by rocking GBV t-shirts in several episodes of the short-lived Discovery program Brewmasters.

Beer Thousand is latest in the Delaware-based brewery’s long-running series that in the past has paid sudsy homage to music legends as diverse as Miles Davis and Del the Funky Homosapien to the Grateful Dead and Bob Mould.
