D.C.'s Best Whiskey Bars

by Lanna Nguyen on Jan 24, 2017 in Roundups

Whether you prefer rye or bourbon, call it whiskey or moonshine - DC has countless bars specializing in the popular distilled spirit.

Barrel
The southern-inspired restaurant and bar has plenty of “Brown Water” (as they call it) on hand - over 60 kinds of bourbon, along with varieties of rye, American/Tenessee, Canadian, and Irish whiskeys to name a few. Pair your drink with southern fare like smoked brisket, fried chicken and New Orleans style crepes. (613 Pennsylvania Ave, SE; 202-543-3622)

Jack Rose Dining Saloon
The popular whiskey spot in Adams Morgan boasts over 2,500 varieties with bottles of scotches, bourbons, ryes, Japanese whiskey and more lining the walls of the main dining room. (2007 18th St, NW; 202-588-7388)

McClellan’s Retreat
The craft cocktail bar takes inspiration from Civil War figures and features an array of American whiskey, rye and bourbon - splurge and get McClellan’s Manhattan for $25: McClellan’s Retreat Select Whistle Pig Barrel 276, Antica Carpa Benedictine, Angostura Bitters. (2031 Florida Ave, NW; 202-265-6270)

Rebellion
A modern version of an American tavern, Rebellion offers over 275 types of bourbon and whiskey and is also home to some of the greatest burgers in the city. If you’re by the Dupont Circle neighborhood spot, check out their homemade barrel-aged cocktails. (1836 18th St, NW; 202-299-0399)

Root Cellar Whiskey Bar
Located under Pinea in the W Hotel, the warm and cozy Root Cellar Whiskey Bar features a collection of rare whiskeys and bourbons - come during happy hour from 4:30 - 6:30 PM and get select cocktails for half price. (515 15th St, NW; 202-661-2442)

Southern Efficiency
Derek Brown’s whiskey bar features traditional bourbons as well as varieties from craft distillers - the cocktail menu is focused on Southern whiskeys, complementing bites like pimento cheese, Frito pie and of course… bourbon balls. (1841 7th St, NW; 202-316-9396)

Takoda
The Shaw beer garden also doubles as a whiskey bar with a healthy offering of bourbons, rye and Tennessee whiskey - come on Wednesdays and get half priced wings and whiskey from 5 - 7 PM. (715 Florida Ave, NW; 202-525-1252)
