Thieves Have Stolen $300,000 Worth of Wine from Paris Catacombs

by Alexander Frane on Sep 6, 2017 in Wine

Beneath parts of Paris lie The Catacombs, a macabre set of tunnels lined with human bones running a total of 150 twisting miles. The Guardian reports that sometime between Monday, August 28 and Tuesday August 29, thieves used these catacombs to drill into a private cellar and steal 300 bottles of Grand Cru wine, the total value nearing $300,000.

The thieves had targeted an apartment building near the Luxembourg Gardens, and drilled through the wall of the catacombs to access it, making off with the wine. Police reported to French media that the burglars must have visited previously, as there was no accident to which cellar they went for.

Most of the catacombs, which hold the remains of 6 million-odd people, are off limits to the public. French police have a special department that patrols them, looking for “cataphile” parties and handing out fines to those that would break in. Most cataphiles are just looking to drink amongst the dead, not make off with thousands of dollars worth of fine wine.
