D.C.'s Best Local Summertime Beers

by Lanna Nguyen on May 17, 2017 in Roundups

The impending dog days of summer have us craving light, refreshing beers, and there’s no better way to beat the heat than with these local, seasonal brews.

3 Stars Brewing Company: Chamomile Saison
A partnership with Espita Mezcaleria, 3 Stars Brewing created a limited release offered exclusively at the Southern Mexican-style restaurant. The Chamomile Saison combines the brewery’s 3 Stars Peppercorn Saison with chamomile (an ingredient found readily throughout Mexico) resulting in a floral, refreshing brew perfect for the late spring and summer months.

Atlas Brew Works: Should I Stay or Should I Gose
The recently released summer seasonal from Atlas Brew Works has hints of berry tartness, finishing with a briney taste. The German-style wheat beer is light and refreshing, a great beer to have on hand during the warmer months. (Gose, 4.4% ABV)

DC Brau: Brau Pils
Although DC Brau’s summer seasonal is offered year-round, the German pilsner is perfect for those muggy DC days. The clean, crisp brew is on tap at a number of restaurants and also sold in cans, perfect for backyards, patios and summer barbecues. (German Pilsner, 4.6% ABV)

Port City Brewing: Derecho Common
Named after the infamous storm that hit DC in 2012, Port City Brewing’s Derecho Common is fermented at higher temperature (a result of the power being cut off for five days in the aftermath of the storm); the lager is medium-bodied with malt flavors finishing with spicy, citrus notes. Celebrate the 2017 release of the summer seasonal at the Alexandria brewery on June 2nd and 3rd with a party in the parking lot featuring live music and local food trucks. (Lager, 4.8% ABV)
