2013 Preview: 5 Bars to Look Forward to in Washington, D.C.
An artsy space for sipping small-batch whiskeys, a new Belgian beer spot and a cocktail list inspired by Teddy Roosevelt are just a few of the things we’re looking forward to in 2013. Here, we’ve rounded up five forthcoming openings that are making us thirsty.
Teddy and The Bully Bar: If you’ve ever had the Farragut Fizz or Mason Dixon Manhattan at Lincoln, then you know there’s good reason to feel aflutter about the impending open of its sister establishment. Themed after our 16th president, this joint will be the second in what is expected to be a series of eateries from Alan Popovsky’s Presidential Restaurant Group. We must be getting close to the expected “early 2013” open date — the bar’s recipe for the Teddy Bloody Mary was already featured on WJLA (1200 19th St. NW; 202-246-1653).
GBD: You need only wait a month or two to experience GBD — Golden Brown Delicious — a Dupont outpost from the same team behind Birch & Barley and Churchkey. While the centerpiece will be fried chicken and famed pastry chef Tiffany MacIssac’s delish doughnuts, they’ll pair with a selection of punches and beers from the forthcoming Bluejacket brewery (1323 Connecticut Ave. NW).
Black Whiskey: Kushi’s Darren Lee Norris is set to open this whiskey-bar-slash-art-gallery in Logan Circle this winter. The two-story restaurant and watering hole will feature a sizable draft list, small-batch American whiskeys and libations concocted by a Passenger alum to complement Scottish pub-inspired cuisine (1410 14th St. NW).
The Red Hen: Formerly the wine director at Proof and Estadio, sommelier Sebastian Zutant is expected to curate a standout wine list at this Italian spot coming soon to Bloomingdale. With handmade pastas and a chef’s vegetable garden, it will be a welcome addition to the neighborhood come spring (1822 1st St. NW).
B Too: Expected to open in March, this 14th Street spot from Belga Cafe owner and Top Chef contestant Bart Vandaele will have a notable beverage program that includes a globally inspired assortment of spirits and vino as well as a sizable Belgian beer list to complement the frites and waffle bar (1324 14th St. NW).
