Scots vote next week on whether or not they will break loose from the United Kingdom, and that has Scotch makers feeling a little uneasy.

This week the trade group The Scotch Whisky Association outlined a number of concerns it has about Scotland’s proposed independence and what effects its outcome will have on the country’s thriving spirits industry.

Chief among them are worries about what kind currency an independent Scotland would use for trade. But there are even bigger concerns about what impact the referendum will have on things like tariffs, taxes and trade laws. Not to mention the huge leg-up Scotch gets from the United Kingdom’s ability to promote exports by negotiating trade agreements worldwide.
