Shmaltz Brewing Celebrates 50 Years of Star Trek with Limited Edition Ales

by Alexander Frane on Jul 26, 2016 in Culture

Star Trek first aired 50 years ago on September 8, 1966. This year has seen multiple celebrations of its storied history in the last half-century, including a musical tour, a new feature film, and the announcement of a new Star Trek television series. But no cultural anniversary is complete without a commemorative beer—luckily, Shmaltz Brewing is providing exactly that.

Shmaltz Brewing, a Jewish brewery in New York, unveiled a limited edition ale last weekend at San Diego Comic-Con and will be serving it again in San Diego during the release of Star Trek Beyond. The beer, a “Golden Anniversary Ale,” is named Trouble with Tribbles for the iconic television episode. It’s made with a collection of appropriately named hops, including Comet, Admiral, Galaxy, Aurora, and Polaris.

In September, at the Star Trek Mission Convention in New York, Shmaltz will release a second Golden Anniversary Ale, this one called Journey to the Northeast Quadrant. It’s a curiously inaccurate name, as there is no north or east in the galaxy. One might assume they mean the Delta Quadrant, the upper right quadrant of the Star Trek Milky Way map, but that still begs the question of why the ale depicts the U.S.S. Enterprise, when it was the U.S.S Voyager that traveled to the Delta Quadrant. Whatever the reason for the name, the beer boasts five types of hops, five types of malt, and 5% ABV in recognition of the first five episodes of Star Trek to air 50 years ago. It’s a fun way to celebrate 50 years of an idealistic science fiction franchise.
