The Blind Pig is no Three Broomsticks. Hell, it would even make the Hog’s Head Inn, birthplace of Dumbledore’s Army, look downright family-friendly. That’s right, we’re talking about the magical speakeasy from the new Harry Potter franchise film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
Fantastic Beasts takes place in 1926, at the height of prohibition, when speakeasies were all the rage. The film went to great lengths to design a bar that fits into JK Rowling’s magical world,
Pottermore reports. The Blind Pig is one part grimy, moldy historical accuracy, and one part pure magical fantasy, with a goblin owner and moving portraits on the walls.
It’s an appropriate setting, as the Harry Potter universe often has establishments hidden from the view of “muggles,” or, as the Americans call them in the movie, “No-Majes.” Speakeasies famously had their own sort of secret way of conveying their existence to a special few while keeping away from prying eyes, though they likely were not guarded by a magic-sensing lipstick advertisement that doubles as a door.
Additionally, if you haven't heard, you can use your Android phone to explore The Blind Pig for yourself, according to
Engadget, and you can use Google to make your way through several magical locations from the film.
While we are inundated these days by speakeasy themed bars, we don’t yet have magical ones (that we know of). We sure wish we had bars with self-pouring drinks in them… though it’s probably safer that we don’t. And, of course, head to see Fantastic Beasts, currently in theaters.
