Here's Where You'll Be Celebrating National Rye Month in D.C.
August marks the beginning of Rye Month and there’s no better way to celebrate the grain than by sipping on drinks that are made with it. From full out whiskey bars to a beer pairing dinner, here are our recommendations on how to pay homage to rye this month.
Chicken + Whiskey
The newly opened restaurant on 14th Street offerings include...you guessed it, chicken and whiskey. Snag a table and nosh on Peruvian-style chicken and then head to the back bar and sip on your choice of over 66 international and domestic whiskeys - 12 of which are rye. (1738 14th St, NW; 202-667-2456)
One of the more recognizable whiskey bars in the city, the Adams Morgan watering hole boasts over 2,500 bottles of whiskey at any given time. Grab a seat at the first floor bar where you’re surrounded by shelves upon shelves of whiskey bottles for your first drink (try the Julep di Amari made with Dickel Rye, J. Riegers Caffe Amaro, Amaro di Angostura and mint) and then head up to the 2nd floor bar which also doubles as a tiki outpost during the summer months and order up a Blue Hawaiian or Mai Tai as a nightcap. (2007 18th St, NW; 202-588-7388)
Close out Rye Month with a special Port City Brewing Company Beer Dinner at Red’s Table in Reston. The modern-American restaurant will be hosting a four course-pairing of seasonal plates (think Maine lobster roll, grilled octopus, and rustic peach galette) with some of the Alexandria brewery’s popular beers. We get it, you want to know where the rye comes in...the dinner’s second course features Salmon Slider with pickled slaw paired with Port City’s Ways & Means Session Rye IPA - brewed with rye and mix of Citra and Centennial hops. August 26, 7:30 PM; tickets are $75 per person. (11150 South Lakes Dr, Reston; 571-375-7755)
When the word “Rye” is in a bar’s name, you can expect a strong cocktail program built around the whiskey. Located in the lounge of the Rosewood hotel in Georgetown, get dressed up for an evening of fancy cocktails at the onyx bar and order a classic like the Oak Aged Manhattan (Rye, Dolin Rouge, Byrhh Quinquina) or try a seasonal sip like the Rye and Sand (Rye, Cocchi Di Torino, Cherry Heering, cherry syrup, orange, lemon and Luxardo Cherry). (1050 31st St, NW; 202-617-2425)
