Head to These D.C. Bars for National Rum Day, August 16
National Rum Day falls on August 16, and to celebrate, we’ve pulled together a list of events and specials taking place throughout the month.
Cuba Libre
Why limit the National Rum Day celebrations to just one day? Over at Cuba Libre, they’re ramping up festivities all month long with two new rum flights available during lunch, brunch and dinner service. The Rum Classic features three ounce pours of Bacardi Solera, Cuba Libre 15 Year and Cuba Libre 21 Year - $16. The Tour of the Dark Side “of Rum” Flight offers a taste of Cruzan Black Strap, Coruba Dark Rum, and Ron Miel - $19. On National Rum Day, guests can enjoy half priced rums and rum-based mixed drinks during happy hour. (801 9th St, NW; 202-408-1600)
Although known for its selection of mezcals, Espita Mezcaleria recently unveiled lineup of summer cocktails feature new spirits including rum. On National Rum Day, order up the Cholo y Chundo made with mezcal, aged rum, pistachio cafe, pineapple, and citrus or try the Santiago Sling with Cotton & Reed white rum, El Buho espadin, passion fruit, pineapple and lime. (1250 9th St, NW; 202-621-9695)
Take part in the 6th Annual Rum Day DC on August 13 - a yearly celebration of rum, the event has an educational component with brands and industry experts engaging with guests to bring more awareness of the distilled liquor to the public. This year’s event will feature DC’s top mixologists (Glendon Hartley of Service Bar, Al Thompson of barmini, and Aaron Joseph from R House Baltimore), unlimited samples and cocktails and endless BBQ from Federalist Pig.
Head to the Latin-Asian sushi spot on 14th Street where they’ll be slinging $5 rum rail cocktails on National Rum Day. Snag a spot on the colorfully decorated rooftop and order up rum classics like Cuba Libres, Mojitos, Hurricanes and Frozen Pina Coladas. (2204 14th St, NW; 202-518-2222)
Embark on a rum hunt and take part in the first ever Tiki Trail. Organized by Brian Nixon of Truxton Inn and McClellan’s Retreat, the Tiki Trail will take place throughout the month of August. Tiki Trail-ers can pick up a treasure map at any of the participating bars (Passenger/Hogo, Archipelago, Cotton & Reed, McClellan’s Retreat, Truxton Inn, Quarter & Glory, Service Bar, Good Silver) and get their map stamped after ordering a participating cocktail. Each location unlocks a clue bringing you one step closer to the final prize: a celebratory luau on Sunday, September 3rd. X marks the spot, so make sure your map is all stamped up as that gives you entry to the luau.
