D.C.'s Best Rooftop Bars
Soak in the last days of rooftop drinking and dining in D.C. The city has a plethora of rooftops, but here are a few of our favorites, including a few tried and true standbys as well as some newer watering holes to check out.
1905
At 1905, guests can enjoy upscale comfort food like Truffled Deviled Eggs, Caviar and Tater Tots and Quinoa-Crayfish hushpuppies while taking in views of the Shaw neighborhood. The roof deck features a full bar and stays open late every night. (1905 19th St, NW; 202-332-1905)
Recently named the “Best American Cocktail Bar,” the Blagden Alley bar’s Punch Garden serves a seasonal menu of cocktails - snag summer drinks like the Dutch East India Company Punch (Batavia Arrack, Genever, Fig Leaf Milk, Lemon, Cane Sugar, Ceylon Tea, Mace) or the Hillbilly in a Hawaiian Shirt (Aged Rum, Sassafras and Birch Soda, Paw Paw Shrub) before the menu changes. The bar also has unique non-alcoholic options for those abstaining. (124 Blagden Alley, NW; 202-316-9396)
New to the Foggy Bottom neighborhood, head to the trendy micro-hotel’s rooftop Hive Bar for its signature froses and pies from &pizza before the summer is over. The bar menu also features regional brews on rotation as well as craft cocktails made with local spirits from Don Ciccio, Cotton + Reed, Green Hat Gin and more. (2224 F St, NW; 202-849-8499)
Roofers Union
The 18th Street bar is known for its selection of frozen boozy beverages and punch bowls available on the third floor rooftop. The open air bar only seats 15, so you best make your way up there to claim your territory - trust us, the views of Adams Morgan are totally worth it. (2446 18th St, NW; 202-232-7663)
Sakerum
The colorful Latin/Asian spot provides a bright respite on 14th Street and a menu of delicious sushi options. Whether you’re dining al fresco with a Bento Box Brunch or taking advantage of the $5 Sake Happy Hour, the 50 seat rooftop area with retractable glass ceiling is perfect for the last days of outdoor drinking. (2204 14th St, NW; 202-518-2222)
Surfside Glover Park
The low-key taco spot boasts its standing as the only roofdeck in the Glover Park neighborhood. Enjoy tacos, burritos, margaritas and more on top of Wisconsin Avenue. (2444 Wisconsin Ave, NW; 202-380-9353)
Takoda
The 71-seat rooftop decked with hanging plants and string lights overlooks Florida Ave. with views of Shaw and nearby U Street and LeDroit Park. In addition to offering 20+ beer options, the rooftop beer garden is also known for its cocktail program with a focus on whiskey. Rooftop is open year round. (715 Florida Ave, NW; 525-1252)
Top of the Yard
The Navy Yard’s Hampton Inn is the only rooftop bar in the neighborhood with a view directly into Nationals Park, meaning you can steal scenes from a baseball game without having to fight the masses. The bar’s menu leans heavy on baseball staples like nachos, half smokes and brats but that just enhances the gameday feel. Rooftop is open April - October. (1265 First St, SE; 202-800-1000)
