How to Count Down to the Holiday Season (With Drinks) in D.C.

by Lanna Nguyen on Dec 5, 2017 in Roundups

The joy of the holiday season is upon us. As kids, the excitement of counting down the days to open all those presents under the tree was a feeling that’s hard to replicate - until you’ve reached adulthood and can now count down in the best way possible: drinking. Check out these bars doing alcoholic countdowns to the holidays.

b DC Penn Quarter
The burger and bourbon bar’s preferred choice of alcohol is, of course, bourbon. Beginning December 13, patrons are invited to take part in the 13 Days of Bourbon: each day at 11am, b DC will unwrap a special, limited-edition bourbon (selections include Knob Creek 2001, 2017 Thomas Handy, and Old Rip Van Winkle 10 yr to name a few). Guests are encouraged to pick up a passport to receive stamps for each bourbon - each tier of punches will get you a reward, with all 13 punches bringing in a $100 gift card. (801 Pennsylvania Ave, NW; 202-808-8720)

Dubliner
The Irish Pub at Capitol Hill will count down the days to Christmas Eve with its inaugural Whiskey Advent Calendar - each day, guests can sample a special whiskey discounted by half price. Whiskeys of the day will be announced via the bar’s social media channels. (4 F Street NW; 202-737-3773)

Free State
In the spirit of the holiday season, the Chinatown, Maryland-themed bar is celebrating with all things sparkly. Every day in December, they’ll be revealing a new sparkling wine or champagne a la Advent Calendar. All bubblys will be available through New Year’s and discounted by $2 during happy hour (4 - 7 PM, Monday - Friday). (501B G St, NW; 202-601-7216)

Hank’s Cocktail Bar
The Petworth cocktail bar’s alcoholic take on the traditional Advent Calendar will include festive libations like the #insantagramable (Apple Brandy, Coffee, Bittered Whip, Nutmeg), How to Handle Having a Holiday Birthday (Bubbly Rose, Hank’s Heritage Reposado Tequila Shot) and An Elf Walks into the Club (Avion Tequila, Campari Lime, Cranberry, Rosemary) from head bartender Jess Weinsten. The bar will reveal the special cocktail of the day by employing its interior decor: a cabinet door behind the bar will double as a cheerful drink sign announcing the seasonal cocktail of the day. December 1 - 24. (819 Upshur St, NW; 202-290-1808)

MXDC
The downtown Mexican restaurant is counting down to the holidays with 25 days of tequila. From mixologist Anthony Tavara comes a highly curated list of tequilas that can be sipped on each day of the month leading up to December 30. Enjoy a new tequila (blancos, reposados, añejos, and extra añejos) each day of the month discounted by 20% beginning December 1. (600 14th St, NW; 202-393-1900)
