Where to Drink on Memorial Day 2018 in D.C.

From rooftop pool parties to an oyster fest and endless crabs, there’s plenty of outdoor activities and events to celebrate Memorial Day and officially kick off summer in DC.

The downtown location will bring back it’s ever-popular Shuckfest. From 11 AM - 4 PM, enjoy oyster specials, ice-cold beverages and lawn games like Giant Jenga and cornhole on the patio. Food specials include $1 oysters (order a minimum of a dozen), $15 Louisiana fried oyster platters and $14 fried oyster po boys. Union Craft Brewing will be doing a mini tap takeover pouring signature draft and guests can also order up $8 frosé specials. (901 9th St, NW; 202-733-5333)

Celebrate Memorial Day at City Tap Dupont’s Pig Roast Tiki Party - the patio will be decked out with sand and inflatable palm trees; the perfect beachy respite for those not able to get away for MDW. From 11 AM - 4 PM, dig into $15 platters of roasted pork, potato salad, hawaiian coleslaw and pineapple salsa. Cool off with $8 frozen pina coladas and brews from Kona Brewing Co. (1250 Connecticut Ave, NW; 202-878-8325)

The rooftop pool at Kimpton Donovan Hotel is officially open for the season, but the holiday weekend will kick off its summer of pool parties. On May 27 take part in the first DNV Rooftop Sunday Pool Party in the series. A $10 entry fee is charged for pool party-goers; from 12 PM - 5 PM, swim and sunbathe to your heart’s content while sipping on beverages from the rooftop cocktail menu including the Orange Rush (pressed orange juice, Deep Eddy Orange Vodka, Luxardo Bitters, Red Bull Orange, Club Soda), The Life Aquatic (shareable cocktail served in a fishbowl made with Avua Cachaca, blueberry shrub, lemon juice, and mint tea with Swedish fish garnish), and the TEA-ki (rum infused with green tea, Batavia Arrack, guava, lemon juice, orgeat). (1155 14th St, NW; 202-379-4366)

Pack up a BBQ and host your own picnic on the National Mall or watch the planes fly over at Hains Point. For the holiday, Sloppy Mama’s is offering a picnic pack filled with BBQ essentials including a rack of ribs, 12 jumbo wings, two pounds of pulled pork and one quart of baked beans, cole slaw, and mac and cheese in addition to a quarter pan of cornbread, a pint of hot sweet pickles and a pint of BBQ sauce. For $99 each, the packs feed 4-6 people with the option of adding pimento cheese and chopped brisket. All orders should be made in advance and can be picked up at Solly’s Tavern or can be delivered for $25.

The Barracks Row bar will be hosting a crab fest on May 27. From 4 PM - 8 PM, enjoy all you can eat bushels of crab, hush puppies and corn for $40. (723 8th St, SE; 202-547-8459)

Enjoy an epic Italian spread at Via Umbria’s Memorial Day brunch. For $44, you’ll receive a glass of Prosecco; bottomless Bloody Marys, Aperol Spritzes or Bellinis; and a 3-course brunch with family-style appetizers (bread with goat butter and jam, mixed seasonal lettuces, sauteed spring vegetables, roasted fingerling potatoes), your choice of entree, and ricotta chocolate tart to finish off the meal. (1525 Wisconsin Ave, NW; 202-333-3904)
