Neighborhood Bar Crawl: H Street

by Lanna Nguyen on Feb 19, 2019 in Roundups

From Asian street food and ramen to cocktail dens, H Street has a mix of it all. Check out some of our top spots to visit when dining and drinking at the Northeast hot spot.

The bi-level restaurant and bar slings Chinese street fare including skewers, bao, and pot stickers on the first floor and outdoor patio. Head up stairs into the dimly lit drinking lounge for specialty cocktails and the classics, like Old Fashioned, Daiquiris and Smashes. (1110 H St, NE; 202-241-1952)

From Philadelphia restaurateurs, the vegetable-forward spot features seasonal savory plates, dessert items and cocktails that all take a plant-based approach. Stop by for happy hour and sip on the Prickly Pete (rum, prickly pear, lime, soda) while munching on inventive snacks like Kung Pao Cucumbers and Maitake Potato Tacos. (600 H St, NE; 202-675-8341)

They hybrid storefront mixes together restaurant, cafe, and fashion. Head upstairs to the daytime coffeeshop for pastries and other baked goods; shop around on the first level for unique apparel and trendy fashion items; and then dine at the restaurant and enjoy Taiwanese and Cambodian dishes - be sure to order the Taiwanese Fried Chicken. (1351 H St, NE; 202-838-9972)

Head to the Mediterranean restaurant for pastries and coffee in the morning and come back for savory dinner dishes inspired by Southern Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean region and North Africa. Standout shared plates include Merguez Kofte and Grilled Octopus - snag both on the happy hour menu for discounted pricing and sip on house-made vermouth. (1344 H St, NE; 202-594-3517)

Check out Swiss staples like traditional cheese fondue, raclette and spatzli at DC’s first Swiss-American restaurant. The warming, comfort dishes are perfect for the colder months, especially when paired with their Hot Apres Ski cocktails. Warm up with Gluhwein and spiked Hot Chocolate among other hot drinks. (1324 H St, NE; 202-733-4604)

The hip ramen joint regularly invites a line out the door, but once you snag a seat, it’s so worth the wait. Ramen is a must (order with a side of prawn heads for maximum delicious effect), but don’t forget about the other Taiwanese and Japanese fusion dishes including steamed buns, dumplings and Shitake Dan Dan noodles. (1234 H St, NE; 202-388-3086)
