Dogfish Head Getting Geeky with Google & Cool with Pearl Jam

Delaware brewery Dogfish Head has been making headlines along with ale, malt and lagers recently. Two new special brews show how wide the audience for craft beer has become. In collaboration with Google, Sam Calgione’s brewhouse has introduced URKontinent.

Incorporating suggestions submitted by Googlers the world over, the Belgian Dubbel uses ingredients from almost every continent. (Except Antarctica. Unless you count the water, which probably originated on a glacier there at some point.)

In addition to pilsner, Munich malt and Belgian Dark Candi syrup from Belgium, the brew process includes Wattleseed from Australia, Amaranth from South America, Rooibox from Africa, Myrica Gale from Europe and honey from California. What does this array of constituents mean for the beer? According to the Dogfish Head website, Google’s beer will be:

a complex dark Belgian style ale with wonderful coffee and chocolate covered cherry flavors. The roastiness of the malt and wattleseed melds with the fruity esters from the yeast, the floral notes from the rooibos, and the malty yet dry signature of a Belgian Dubbel.

Currently only available on draft in Delaware, the 8% ABV label is expected to ship in bottles early next year. With a community-sourced recpe and a name that is reminiscent of “Urkel,”  the whole arrangement gives a new meaning to the term “beer geek.” Even tech blog Gizmodo was freaking out over the possibility of tasting a pint.

On the other side is Dogfish Head’s collaboration with Pearl Jam. A Belgian-style golden checking in at 7% ABV, Faithfull Ale celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Seattle rock band. The brew falls right between “beer and northeast Pinot Noirs – the band’s two favorite beverages,” Calagione told Brewbound.

Created while listening to Peal Jam’s debut album Ten “really loud,” the brew is delicately hopped and is fruit-forward, from 10 incremental additions of black currants over a one-hour boil. Inspired by Pearl Jam’s ethics, the brewery will also donate $20,000 to the Nature Conservancy in the name of this label. 750ml bottles are expected to begin shipping to all Dogfish Head markets on October 17, 2011.
