Local Wines and Autumnal Cocktails at the Farmland Feast, Nov 7
Locavores, take note: On Monday, November 7, some of D.C.’s best known chefs and sommeliers will come together for the 2011 Farmland Feast, a benefit in support of FreshFarm Markets and the 11 producer-only farmers’ markets it oversees. The farm-to-glass event will take place at the Ritz-Carlton from 6–10 PM and will include a seasonal cocktail as well as wine pairings for each of five courses, for $250 per person.
A veteran participant in the Farmland Feast, Eve/PX Lounge master mixologist Todd Thrasher hand-picked an impressive lineup of participants for this year’s event. Citronelle’s Meredith Baearov and Proof Restaurant’s Sebastian Zutant are among those who have culled a delectable selection of local wines—none produced more than 60 miles away—to be paired with the cuisine. While Thrasher, a Virginia native, admits he’s not traditionally a fan of vino produced in his home state, he says he’s impressed with the selection of local varietals at this event, particularly the red from Boxwood Winery. “It tastes like real Bordeaux wine,” he says, calling it a step above many of the wines produced in this country.
Though wine pairings will take center stage at the main event, expect a Thrasher-concocted libation during the reception. Using pears from a local farmer’s market, the cocktail will use pear juice, pear butter (made with winter spices such as nutmeg, cinnamon and allspice) and spirits such as XXX Shine Whiskey and Bluecoat Gin from Philadelphia Distilling, which he describes as “one of the best gins made in America.” With that stamp of approval, how could we resist?
