Irish Whiskey: Classic Meets Modern in Dupont Circle
Last month, Dupont Circle added a newcomer to it’s already substantial bar roster. Irish Whiskey takes the concept of Irish pub to a new level, with over 50 different types of whiskey, a 80-beer strong craft brew list and modern Irish-American cuisine.
Designer Maggie O’Neill of O’Neill Designs helped create Irish Whiskey’s ambiance, which combines the traditional with the new. The decor is akin to what you might find in your average Dublin local… if an interior designer had been the one to perfectly arrange the furniture, barrels, and brass fixtures, as well as throw in a few modern pieces. The blend of classic Irish themes and modern flare gives the three-floor pub a fun and inviting feel. Tables and stools are well-placed to encourage conversation and interaction, rather than creating divided spaces for individual parties.
The impressive spirits collection includes several rare Irish whiskeys, such as Green Spot Single Pot Still – quite pricey at $49 a pour, but very distinct. Notes of pear, vanilla and strawberry finish with a dry floral sweetness finish, and only a small batch
of 1,200 bottles is produced annually.
The Gaelic theme continues with several single malt Scotch whiskys on the bar, and several American craft whiskeys are also in house. For example, Booker's Small Batch Bourbon is an uncut, unfiltered, straight-from-the-barrel spirit, aged between six–eight years to bring out varying flavors, from smoky vanilla to lighter tones of mocha and coffee ($15).
If you’re a whiskey connoisseur, or would like to become one, ask about joining the tavern’s Members-Only Whiskey Club. Imbibe with like-minded individuals as you work your way down a list of notable whiskey brands, and – as if you need more motivation – a trip to Ireland will be awarded every six months from a drawing of patrons who have completed the list. Sláinte!
Beyond the whiskey, the 80-plus beer choices include 14 brews on tap (6-$19) and ten specialty cocktails. One to try is the Shamrock, an Irish twist on a White Russian (a White Irishman?), made with Jameson, Bailey’s Irish Cream, and Kahlua, served over ice ($10).
Of all the cocktails we sampled during our visit, the favorite was the Brotherhood – a blend of Michael Collins Single Malt Whiskey, Grand Marnier and fresh lemon juice, shaken and served up. It’s delicious, very refreshing and tart with just a slight sweetness ($10).
Another interesting drink is the Frisky Whiskey (Michael Collins Single Malt, fresh orange juice, honey). This tastes a bit like a cold version of a classic hot toddy, and also goes for $10. If you are a big fan of the flavor of honey, this is a sip for you.
Overall, Irish Whiskey is a fun venue, just as well suited to a quick post work nip or as an extended all-nighter.
