The Mothership Connection: Chocolate City Beer's First Limited Release, Feb 29
UPDATE: The tapping of the first keg of The Mothership Connection will go down on Leap Day, February 29, at 7 PM at Ironhorse.
D.C.’s newest brewery is getting into the seasonal game. As soon as March 1, Chocolate City will release a limited supply of The Mothership Connection, a 8–9% ABV Weizenbock that founder Jason Irizarry succinctly describes as “f*ckin delicious.”
The dark wheat beer has deep fruit notes, a rich malty body and a complex aroma that makes it something really special, which led to the label’s name (after a Parliment album). “A beer like this doesn’t come along every day,” Irizarry notes, “and not everyday does a space craft of funk lands in your back yard, either.
The new ale is based on a recipe the Chocolate City team first tried “in the back yard,” during the testing phase before the company was officially up and running. “We made it to break up the monotony of all the IPAs we were brewing at the time,” Irizarry remembers.
Only eight barrels of The Mothership Connection will be produced, but additional limited release offerings are planned for spring, summer and fall, to complement the four-label strong roster of standards. In operation since summer of 2011, the Brookland-based operation has been steadily growing, and now distributes to nearly 40 bars and restaurants. The brewery also holds growler hours every Saturday from 12:30–4:30 PM.
