Drinker's Choice Winner, Best Sports Bar: Nellie's
Nellie’s is a unique part of the drinking scene in D.C. – the popular hangout is a gay sports bar, a moniker that might seem oxymoronic to people in other regions of the country. However, since opening in 2007, crowds both gay and straight have flocked to the U Street pub. The love is so strong that Nellie’s won Best Sports Bar in our 2012 Drinker's Choice Awards. We caught up with the proprietors via email to get their response.
– Can you name two (or more) specific things that make Nellie's special/deserving of the win?
Nellie’s hosts events for local sports teams, alumni groups, charities, and even birthday parties. Nellie’s Sports Bar is a great spot to grab a drink, a bite to eat, and to socialize with friends even if you aren’t into watching sports! We have soaring ceilings, antique decor, and an expansive rooftop deck that allows guests to absorb views of the city from above.
– Can you tell us briefly why you were inspired to open Nellie's?
The name “Nellie’s” is a salute to co-owner Doug Schantz’s great- and great-great-grandmothers, who were both named Nellie. The new sports bar was inspired in part by their whimsical and hospitable personalities.
