Tropicalia Coming Soon to U Street
Over the weekend, we spotted what looks like a custom painting arriving at the basement-level space beneath Lost Society at 14th and U streets NW. Rumor has it in the very near future this will be home to Tropicália, a nightlife destination from the same team that originally opened Eighteenth Street Lounge, Local 16 and the now-closed Dragonfly.
Tropicália is the name of a 1960s Brazilian cultural movement named for an installation by artist Hélio Oiticica and, later, a popular piece of music. Not unlike the hippie movement around the same time in the United States, it was reflected in the music, art and poetry of the day. If this photo is any indication, the U Street bar will capture that same passion for the visual arts, and we can only assume music will be a key element as well. That leaves us wondering: What of the cocktails? Here’s hoping for delicious caipirinhas.
