Warm Up With These Hot Drinks This Winter in D.C.

by Lanna Nguyen on Dec 12, 2017 in Roundups

DC officially saw its first snow fall and while the weather in the district is notorious for being temperamental and unpredictable in the winter, the frost and chill are a perfect excuse to hole in at your bar of choice and sip on warm cocktails all night long. Here are our choices for where to warm up with a hot cocktail when the forecast gets cold.

Bourbon Steak
Warm up with a Hot Toddy (Drambuie, black tea, cinnamon, fresh lemon, fresh orange, with your choice of Barr Hill Gin, Jameson, Bulleit Martel’s or Avion Reposado Tequila) and the Baja Hot Chocolate (Patron XO Incendio, house-made cocoa, Arbol chile, Criollo chocolate, topped with house-made spicy chantilly cream) at the Four Seasons’ modern steakhouse. (2800 Pennsylvania Ave, NW; 202-944-2026)

Calico
The recently opened bar in Blagden Alley has three featured cocktails for the winter season. Try the Hot Chocolate, made with rich dark chocolate and your choice of mint or raspberry vodka; A Spoonful of Sugar, served with orange and rye or mezcal; and a traditional Hot Toddy made with honey, clove and bourbon. (50 Blagden Alley, NW; 202-791-0134)

Commissary
The relaxed Logan Circle bar’s warm cocktail additions include a Spiced Mulled Wine (red wine, ginger, all-spice, cinnamon, orange, apple), Spiced Caramel Apple (salted caramel infused vodka, local apple cider) and a Peppermint Hot Cocoa (peppermint infused vodka, hot chocolate). (1443 P St, NW; 202-299-0018)

Grillfish
Head to the seafood-centric spot in West End and try the hot Spiked Mulled Cider made with oranges, cranberries, rosemary, cinnamon and star anise. (1200 New Hampshire Ave, NW; 202-331-7310)

Hazel
Pop into Hazel for the “I Winter in Aspen” made with white hot chocolate, juniper, sesame, Vitae gin, and white cranberry. (808 V St, NW; 202-847-4980)

Logan Tavern
Stop by the casual eatery for their warm cocktail special this winter: the (C)hai Tea is a blend of bourbon, chai tea, steamed milk and citrus - available during brunch. (1423 P St, NW; 202-332-3710)

Pennsylvania 6
The downtown raw bar and restaurant’s hot cocktails include Winter is Coming, a spiked hot cocoa with amaretto, Bailey’s, whipped cream, and a cinnamon stick and the Hazelnut Hug with creme de cocoa, Frangelico, whipped cream, and chocolate shavings. (1350 Eye St, NW; 202-796-1600)

Pop’s SeaBar
Orange Crushes normally reign supreme at the the Jersey Shore boardwalk-inspired bar, but this winter, they’re also serving a hot spiced cider with a shot of Captain Morgan’s Cannonball Blast. (1817 Columbia Rd, NW; 202-534-3933)

Sixth Engine
The former firehouse-turned-restaurant will be serving up four warm cocktails this season: a White Hot Chocolate (hot cocoa, white chocolate, rum, topped with salted chocolate whipped cream), the Firehouse Toddy (Sixth Engine’s house Woodford, honey liqueur, lemon and all-spice honey syrup, topped with hopped grapefruit bitters); an Irish Coffee (ME Swings coffee, Dubliner IrIsh whiskey, topped with house-made Bailey’s whipped cream: and a Spiced Hot Cider (mulled cider, fall spices, Applejack and house Woodford). (438 Massachusetts Ave, NW; 202-506-2455)

The Bird
Check out the Firebird Hot Toddy at the poultry-centric restaurant - warm up with the brown butter infused rye whiskey, apple cider reduction, Averna, brown sugar cocktail topped with hot water, and garnished with sage and lemon. (1337 11th St, NW; 202518-3609)

Top of the Gate
The rooftop bar the Watergate has no shortage of warm cocktails this winter with four drinks including a Spiked Hot Chocolate, Kentucky Apple Cider, Mulled Wine, and Keoke Coffee made with Kahlua, creme de cacao, brandy, and coffee. (2650 Virginia Ave, NW; 202-827-1600)
